The project was simply this, take 25 photos in five different types of lighting displaying "The Image of God". Our week was on lighting, so this was a good way to practice what we had learned. :)
I chose to do eyes because you can tell a lot about a person by simply looking in their eyes. You know the whole "windows to the soul" deal.
See how life in South Africa really is through their eyes
Our weekend Daily Rush was Childhood, and I got lucky :) I went home with Xandra (my classmate) for the weekend and because of our weekend project (Lighting Assignment- Image of God). We got this idea that since her mom works in a township that we could see if we could drive down the road and take a couple pictures in the township. It worked. I was only in the township shooting for a little under an hour, but all i could think of was how much I missed working with these kids! My last time in South Africa was spent working with children just like these and my heart was so full during those times. Im excited for the day God brings me to work with children full time.
Anyway :) Here are a few from my Childhood Daily Rush
It took an obnoxious amount of time to get these two mediocre photos to load hahaha
The daily rush was simply color. Which actually was really quite hard for me. I find that I prefer taking photos of things that are not already beautiful :)
Or at the very least moving at a pace an american cannot wait for. :)
Plus internet here cost money, so the longer your on the more internet you waste (although the cost is pretty cheap... I think its the principle of the thing)
So im going to try to add everything I've wanted to add within the next days or so :)
Because I didnt get a chance to go off base and go anywhere special I simply went to the little market next door and asked if I could take photos. They laughed and let me :))
Take 26 photos, one for every letter of the alphabet. But instead of taking pictures of things that begin with a certain letter you have to take a picture of something that begins with the letter of a concept. Don't get it? You'll see.
A for Abandoned
B for Bound
C for Connected
D for Displaced
Due to the slow slow slow South African internet I can't show you the whole alphabet. So here are a few of my favorites.
If you come over to my house for dinner we will all gather around my table, pulling up a couple extra chairs and just laugh together while we eat. If between the jokes you happen to look to the one end of the table you'll see a china cabinet full of random art work my brothers and I crafted when we couldn't see over the kitchen table on our own. If you get a chance to really look into the glass you'll notice immediately none of us has any talent in art work. It's just the truth. But if you look to the right corner of the cabinet you'll see a small clay pot made in the shape of a monkey- my prized piece. If you look into the pot you'll see a blue ribbon reading "3rd place for 3rd grade art fair". My first and last art award.
But today I got my second.
Best Photo of the Week
I think I might have jumped from a solid 3 to a hard 4.
God you are so wonderful.
Why the heck have you given me this chance?
My brain is reeling after the first week.
So much technical information thrown at me all at once.
Bam.
You're a photographer.
They said we need to start thinking of ourselves as just that-photographers.
Not people who take photos, but scribes of a new generation. Telling the story of God not with pen and ink but with a camera. With visual poetry.
I am a scribe. Bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth with the skill of camera angles. Displaying Gods wonder, capturing His heart.
You are so wonderful Lord. That you would even allow me to come here, to expand the way I am able to worship you. I feel like I am becoming more useful for the kingdom, like I belong in the courts before your throne. Displaying an array of colors before you, working to show my love for you. Writing you such beautiful poetry.
Today they asked us to rate our photographic experience from 1- 10
I said I'm sitting at a solid 2 1/2.
But by the end of this project I'm pretty sure I've reached new heights.
I'm a secure 3.
Embarrassed by the fact I didn't even know how to manually focus a lens (I think I played it off well)
It made me wonder once again why God brought me here... but only for a short second.
The revelation of His beauty has been so powerful, and if I had to come here only to realize this.. It would have been worth it. But He hasn't stopped there, not even close.
While I was doing work duty I was listening to this song on repeat
"Your mercy, it covers your throne like a rainbow, like a rainbow And here I find myself in the sweetest embrace with a love that I could never earn and it’s only in this place that I am truly safe surrendered to beauty untold
..............................
Your mercy, it flows from your throne like a river, like a river
And here I find myself in this healing embrace
It’s a love like I have never known
and it’s only in this place
that I am truly safe surrendered to beauty untold"
-Mercy By Corey Asbury
And I got these images of Mercy flowing from his throne as a rainbow of living color.
So when it came time to pick my object I picked my scarf.
This is Leilah's blog.
And me? I'm Leilah's keyboard.
This is pretty much the same as any other teenage gypsy Jesus-Freaks blog.
We've tried insisting on some flashy icons or videos... but, sorry to say, this is all you get.
Oh..... and she wanted to make sure that this got in this section: that above all, every photograph is shot for His glory. Every frame trying to paint a picture of His beauty.
